Near-field thermal transistor.
Using a block of three separated solid elements, a thermal source and drain together with a gate made of an insulator-metal transition material exchanging near-field thermal radiation, we introduce a nanoscale analog of a field-effect transistor that is able to control the flow of heat exchanged by evanescent thermal photons between two bodies. By changing the gate temperature around its critic...
متن کاملThe quantum interference effect transistor.
We give a detailed discussion of the quantum interference effect transistor (QuIET), a proposed device which exploits the interference between electron paths through aromatic molecules to modulate the current flow. In the off state, perfect destructive interference stemming from the molecular symmetry blocks the current, while in the on state, the current is allowed to flow by locally introduci...
متن کاملThermal Conductance of a Single-Electron Transistor.
We report on combined measurements of heat and charge transport through a single-electron transistor. The device acts as a heat switch actuated by the voltage applied on the gate. The Wiedemann-Franz law for the ratio of heat and charge conductances is found to be systematically violated away from the charge degeneracy points. The observed deviation agrees well with the theoretical expectation....
متن کاملPlanar double gate quantum wire transistor
A planar double gate quantum wire transistor (QWT) is proposed and demonstrated. The transistor uses a narrow wire gate placed inside the gap of a split gate to create a single one-dimensional ( 1D) quantum wire (QW) . We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that the wire gate can create a QW potential with a better confinement and therefore larger subband separations than that in other...
متن کاملPlanar field-induced quantum dot transistor
We propose and demonstrate a new field-induced quantum dot transistor that has a nanoscale dot-gate inside the gap of a split gate. Because of the novel structure and small dot size, strong oscillations in the drain current as a function of the gate bias were observed at a temperature up to 4.2 K or with a drain bias up to 5 mV. Temperature dependent study showed that the energy gaps in the dot...
